Abbe, Sawyer, Trujillo for La Honda- Pescadero Unified School District seats

Published/Last Modified on Wednesday, Oct 20, 2004 - 01:02:07 pm PDT

Parents in the La Honda-Pescadero Unified School District can thank their lucky stars for four very strong candidates who are vying for three seats on the district's board of trustees.

The Review was impressed with the thoughtful responses of Jessica Abbe, Robert Monsen, Ed Sawyer and Larry Trujillo when each candidate was quizzed in separate interviews with our editorial board. Thus it was difficult to narrow the field and ultimately endorse Abbe, Sawyer and Trujillo for election.

Abbe is a La Honda writer and filmmaker and a longtime resident. She heaps praise on principals in the district and has nothing but kind words for the hard work the current board has put in to improve schools on the South Coast. We see her as an important voice for La Honda, which can sometimes be lost in more obvious Pescadero concerns.

Sawyer is an idea man. A small business owner from Pescadero, he speaks passionately about schools being important building blocks in the community. When he says his lack of experience will only heighten his sensitivity to untapped possibility, we believe him. He is interested in charter schools and other innovative concepts employed elsewhere and we're interested to hear what he has to say.

Trujillo is, frankly, the dream candidate. He boasts a Ph.D and an impressive history of work in the state's higher education system. He has brought mentors into the district as part of his work as executive director of Student Support Services at the University of California, Santa Cruz. We think he can be inspirational for students who would be the first in their family to seek higher education.

Sometimes voters are faced with choosing between the lesser of evils. That is not the case in the La Honda-Pescadero Unified School District. The Review is proud to recommend such strong candidates as Abbe, Sawyer and Trujillo.
