'Water summit' planned on coast

Plans are in the works to assemble a group of local, state and federal representatives for a first-of-its-kind water summit on the Coastside.

For now, the particulars are a few weeks away. The agenda is not yet complete and invitations have just been sent out.

Nevertheless, some things are certain.

The discussion will focus on the possibility of bringing recycled water to the coast, a controversial topic in the past.

Organizers say the water summit will focus on a more efficient use of water resources on the Coastside, primarily as a means of replenishing beleaguered Pilarcitos Creek for the recovery of steelhead trout, a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act.

"The development and use of recycled wastewater is critical to restoring flows and managing groundwater adjacent to Pilarcitos Creek, as well as, providing for the future of agriculture and job stability for the local economy," wrote Patrick Rutten, a regional supervisor from the National Marine Fisheries Service in a letter to various agencies.

The water summit is being organized by the San Mateo County Farm Bureau, San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, Coastside County Water District, and the National Marine Fisheries Service. Among those agencies invited are the Sewer Authority Midcoast and Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary.
