School district postpones meeting

Cabrillo Unified School District board members won't be voting on a middle school site this week - or anything else for that matter after the much anticipated board meeting was postponed from this week until the day after the election, Nov. 9.

The board was expected to vote to construct the proposed new middle school at the current Cunha Intermediate School site during the Oct. 13 meeting, after an independent advisory committee found it to be the most cost effective and expedient option.

However, after heated debate, the board postponed the vote on grounds that more information was needed regarding the Cunha site.

Ultimately, the delay frustrated the expectations of a crowd that almost filled the CUSD board room, hoping to witness the historic vote.

Many voiced strong concerns about what they perceived as constant delays and ongoing school board politics.

Board members contend that the meeting originally scheduled for Nov. 3 was postponed for practical and logistical reasons having nothing to do with politics or the upcoming election.

Dwight Wilson, CUSD board president, said that key district administrators have been gone and that board members are still seeking more information about the potential of building at the present Cunha site.

"I think it's unfortunate," said Ken Johnson, CUSD activist and critic. "I didn't really understand why they wanted to postpone it. I think 10 years is long enough to think about it."
