Living in 'the now'

Chasing goals until you leave yourself in the dust is doing you harm, says Redwood City resident Tom Fitzgerald.

He suggests experiencing the present moment as it really is, and yourself as you really are, free of outside expectations.

That's what he offers in "Present Being Awareness," a workshop next Thursday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at Enso in Half Moon Bay.

It will include meditation, he said, but focus mostly on discussion about how participants are feeling at the moment. The idea, he said, is to "relax into a deep place and a deeper understanding of who you are, in relation to who you think you are, to the world and all the role-playing in that."

Originally from Ireland and a United States resident for 20-plus years, Fitzgerald pursued achievement to an MBA from Harvard.

But he found it hard sledding.

"I wasn't in the moment," he said. "I wasn't really present. Always going to the next place. It was a very external life. Very disconnecting for me."

His response was to branch out on his own spiritual path, taking workshops and studying philosophies but accepting none.

"I try not to get hooked on anything, (but) follow other energies leading my life," he said. "A path of direct knowing, following my own direct experience, as opposed to leading someone else's life."

He found peace in the present.

"To fill the emptiness in you, you don't need to go outside to fill the void. You're already complete," he said.

Enso is located at 131 Kelly Ave. in Half Moon Bay. The fee for his workshop is $15. Sign up by calling Mauro Fortissimo at Enso at 726-1409.
