COUGARS WIN MIDGET POP WARNER TITLE

The Coastside Cougars Midget Pop Warner football team defeated the South Valley Grizzles of San Jose, 27-7, Sunday to claim the Peninsula Pop Warner Division III title.

Coastside took the lead late in the first quarter when Sergio Covarrubias returned a fumble 65 yards for a score. Chewy Huerta kicked the PAT.

South Valley's next drive ended with Covarrubias blocking a punt.

Covarrubias forced another fumble, which Joey Erdie recovered. Huerta kicked the field goal.

Touchdown runs by Blake Kastl and Nate Seaton accounted for the rest of the scoring.

Coastside ends its season Saturday, playing in the Regional III title game, at 4 p.m. at Townsend Field in Santa Clara. The opponent was not announced at press time.

FENCERS GET GOLD

Four members of the Coastside Academy of Fencing won their respective divisions at the regional tournament, held in San Francisco, Nov. 3 and 4.

Stirling Johnson claimed the Youth-10 Women's Sabre Division. Clarissa Perez won in Youth-12 Women's Sabre Division and Elizabeth Jug took the Youth-14 Women's Sabre Division.

Andrew Gleeson claimed the Youth-12 Men's Sabre Division.

Both Perez and Gleeson beat the top-ranked national champions to win the title.

Perez was also eighth in the Youth-14 Women's Sabre Division.

Lotus Lum was second in the Youth-10 Women's Sabre Division.

Tara Davis won the bronze in the Youth-14 Women's Epee division.

Carrie Gilchrist won the bronze in the Youth-14 Women's Sabre Division.

Miranda Guerrero (Youth-12 Women's Sabre Division) and Spencer Boling (Youth-12 Men's Sabre Division) were both eighth in their respective divisions.

PEE WEE TEAM FINISHES SECOND IN TITLE GAME

The Coastside Cougars Pee Wee Pop Warner football team lost to Monterey, 13-7, in the Peninsula Division III title game Saturday.

Coastside's only score was a touchdown pass from Christopher Bradley to Ryan Segervall.

Coastside ends its season, playing at 2 p.m., Saturday at Townsend Field in Santa Clara.

Coastside's opponent was not known at press time.

NELSON QUALIFIES FOR STATE MEET

Kate Nelson qualified for the state gymnastics meet, after a strong showing at the Zone 7 championships, held in San Bruno on Nov. 4.

Competing in the younger age division, Nelson won the uneven bars with a score of 9.625. She was third on the floor, fifth on the vault and ninth on the beam to finish third overall.

Teammate Hailey Merkes was sixth on the vault.

In the middle age division, Isabella Cambra was second on the beam and seventh on the vault to finish 10th in the all-around competition.
