Coaches go barefoot with an eye toward helping others

Published/Last Modified on Wednesday, Feb 03, 2010 - 10:28:34 am PST

John Carey will remember Tuesday night’s Peninsula Athletic League Ocean Division girls’ basketball game for a long time.

There was plenty at stake when Half Moon Bay High School hosted San Mateo, but that may not be what he remembers.

Carey coached the game shoeless.

Assistant coach Johnelle Parsons, and scorekeeper Deanna Rocha were similarly barefoot. San Mateo coach Nancy Dinges also paced the sidelines, sans shoes.

It’s the first time any of the coaches have gone shoeless for a game, but it’s nothing new in the wider basketball world.

It all started in 2008 when Ron Hunter, men’s basketball coach at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis went barefoot to raise awareness for a charity that collects shoes for poor children around the world.

Lots of people noticed Hunter’s gesture.

According to the charity, Samaritan’s Feet, more than 3,000 basketball coaches, from recreation leagues to high schools to college Division I, will coach at least one game this year without shoes.

Carey first learned of Hunter’s act while reading a magazine.

“I thought it was a nice gesture,” Carey said. “It doesn’t take a whole lot to do this. I like the idea of doing something to raise money for the charity.

“Ideally, I’d like to see everyone in the division do this,” Carey said.
